Duke Keaton’s Heartfelt Tribute: Son Honors Diane Keaton’s Iconic Style in First Sighting Since Her Passing
Family and Hollywood Mourn the Loss of the Unconventional Legend
LOS ANGELES, CA – Just days after the shocking passing of beloved Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, her adopted son, Duke Keaton, was spotted for the first time on Sunday, exiting the late star’s Sullivan Canyon residence in Los Angeles.
The 25-year-old, clad in somber black attire while grieving the loss of the Hollywood icon, found a unique and poignant way to honor his mother’s memory: sporting two cross necklaces, a distinctive fashion statement that the Annie Hall star made famous. Keaton was renowned for her quirky, androgynous style, which often featured bold hats and multiple layers of jewelry.
Duke, whom Keaton adopted as a baby in 2001 when she was 55, along with his 29-year-old sister, Dexter, has maintained a relatively private life, a choice Keaton attributed to ensuring a “relatively normal” upbringing away from the glare of her fame.
An Unconventional Life and Legacy
Diane Keaton, born in 1946, leaves behind a cinematic legacy and an estimated fortune of $100 million. The two-time Golden Globe winner shot to fame as Michael Corleone’s second wife, Kay Adams, in The Godfather Trilogy (1972-1990), and solidified her status as a cultural icon in eight Woody Allen films, most notably the 1977 classic, Annie Hall, for which she won her Oscar.
Later career highlights included a memorable performance as the neurotic Annie Mack Dugan in the 1996 divorce comedy The First Wives Club, which grossed $181 million worldwide. She also enjoyed a fruitful partnership with writer-director Nancy Meyers on films like Baby Boom (1987) and Something’s Got to Give (2003).
Despite passionate, high-profile relationships with co-stars like Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Woody Allen, Keaton famously never married. She reflected on this choice in a 2021 interview, linking it back to her mother’s sacrifices. “It goes back to my mother because most everything does for me… She opted for family instead of pursuing her dreams. She was an amazing mother, but I believe she is the reason I never got married. I wish to retain my independence.”
Final Days and Condolences Pour In
The tragedy began to unfold early Saturday morning when the LAFD received a 911 call reporting a “person down” at Keaton’s home. The star was transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital around 8:08 a.m.
The news sent a wave of shock across Hollywood. High-profile colleagues, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Goldie Hawn, and Viola Davis, have publicly offered their condolences.
Meanwhile, friends and former colleagues flocked to Keaton’s stunning $29 million, five-bedroom dream home in Sullivan Canyon to pay their respects. Actress Sarah Paulson was photographed visiting the estate on Sunday, and a black SUV belonging to Ben Affleck was also seen arriving at the upscale property.
Adding a somber note to the final weeks of Keaton’s life, songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, who penned Keaton’s debut single “First Christmas,” revealed to People on Sunday that she had seen the actress recently. “A couple of weeks back, I saw her and she looked very thin. She had lost so much weight.” Sager explained that Keaton’s house had sustained internal damage and she had been staying in Palm Springs while it was being cleaned.
Keaton’s last public sighting was in April 2024 at a dinner in Beverly Hills. Her final on-screen role was in the 2024 comedy Summer Camp, which unfortunately garnered negative reviews.
The film world continues to mourn a true original—an actress, director, producer, and style icon who dedicated her life to her art, her independence, and, ultimately, her two beloved children. Her legacy, defined by her unconventional charm and groundbreaking roles, will endure.
