Reclining in bed, frail and fatigued, Isabella would browse through her phone, observing her twin sister, Sophia, enjoying the sun on a vacation. Friends shared images from campus gatherings, football matches, and spring break escapades — glimpses of a life Isabella once experienced. She ought to have been there, sharing laughter with her friends, navigating her college journey like any other freshman. Instead, she was battling for her survival.

However, if there is one thing the Strahan family understands deeply, it is resilience — and Isabella’s narrative serves as a compelling testament to that. “I heard recently that there were speculations about me dropping out of school to pursue modeling,” Isabella revealed. The 20-year-old has recently returned after triumphing over cancer to resume her studies at USC. In October 2023, the Strahan family struggled to process the news that Isabella was contending with medulloblastoma. At that time, she was merely 18. “She was genuinely at risk of experiencing a seizure, suffering a stroke, and potentially losing her life,” Isabella’s doctor recounted in her documentary. Last year, in July 2024, Isabella’s medical team announced that she was free of cancer.

However, the journey has not been straightforward. It has involved rigorous radiation treatments and countless chemotherapy sessions. As Isabella reflects on her experiences, she has numerous insights to share. Indeed, she has been actively doing so through her vlogs, social media platforms, and interactions with the media when they approach her. “At the start of my journey, I was not particularly optimistic. I primarily focused on the worst possible outcomes. I believe that mindset can be quite harmful,” she expressed in an interview with People. Recently, the 20-year-old participated in a podcast titled Beyond the Battlefront with Noor Hassan, where she discussed her journey and its impact on her school life. Noor, a cancer survivor herself, is currently a high school student.

Isabella recounted her feelings of being left behind as the world around her continued to move rapidly. She described how this situation initially affected her. “I would find myself scrolling through everyone’s stories, watching them do everything.” She mentioned that observing her twin sister, Sophia, enjoying vacations during spring break would trigger feelings of FOMO. “I think the most significant aspect was seeing my sister, like, ‘Oh, she’s in the Bahamas on spring break and having all this fun.’”

When one finds themselves in a stagnant situation while observing others progressing, it is only natural to experience such feelings. Isabella had to leave school during her freshman year, which understandably led her to feel as though she was missing out while her peers continued with their lives. She expressed, “I was like, ‘Well, I’m sitting in a house.’ It was more about not seeing anyone and realizing that everyone else’s life was moving forward, right?”

However, this was not the sole challenge she faced.

After triumphing over her illness and celebrating her victory with confetti, the 20-year-old has been actively resuming her life. Whether it involves returning to USC or attending football games, Isabella is quickly catching up on her activities.

Nevertheless, the nine arduous months spent in a hospital bed were a harrowing experience for her. Reflecting on her struggles with weight during treatment, Isabella remarked, “I lost a significant amount of weight during my treatments, which was inevitable due to my lack of appetite… However, one thing I regret is not being more active.” She believes there were several actions she could have taken differently.

“I understand it’s incredibly challenging at times, and I was reluctant to move. Yet, I wish I had forced myself to walk, even just 100 steps a day, as I lost so much muscle in my legs,” Isabella added. Now that she has returned to USC, she feels immense happiness. However, her social circle has evolved. Isabella noted that everyone has established their own groups and friendships, necessitating her to forge new connections. “It’s certainly intriguing to be back at school and witness all the friend groups that formed in my absence. But honestly, it’s an adjustment since I was away for the majority of the year,” she shared.

It seemed as though she could nearly identify with Matthew Broderick’s role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when he remarks, ‘Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.’ However, it is not as if one can never compensate for lost time. Isabella, at just 20 years of age, has already demonstrated that she is a warrior. Michael Strahan’s young daughter is not merely a cancer survivor – she embodies so much more.
